The Long Goodbye
It is the middle of the nineteenth century, and the Emperor of Japan has called an end to the Samurai. Mori and Aoi, two of the disbanded warriors, must learn to reforge their paths through a society which has become alien to them. As they struggle to come to terms with their past and to seize a novel and threatened future, they must rely on all their cleverness and wile, their strength and courage, their skill with the blade and their fidelity to one another.
The Long Goodbye is a meditation on friendship, loyalty, loves new and old, and the bitter-sweet nature of change — a tale of finding new life in a dying time.
A strong debut. Highly recommended. The characters are interesting and credibly portrayed … and face the same challenges as ourselves, like loss, revenge and love, which gives the story a deeper dimension … [E]xciting, and the battle scenes are deadly realistic. At the same time, the insight into Japanese culture and bushido is very much appreciated.
