P R Reddall explores the surprising depth found in revisiting the familiar, using the film Total Recall as a key example to highlight how new insights can transform our understanding of reality and ourselves.

Many years ago I was asked to read some books as part of a course set by a man who had been involved with both the esoteric and exoteric practice of Odinism. Initially, some of the books were a surprise as they did not relate to Odinism at all, and in fact I had already read some of them back in my school days.

“Re-read them”, I was told. “You will see them in a new light as you progress on your path.”

I did as requested and he was quite right; the further we develop spiritually and intellectually, the deeper we are able to see and new perspectives arise.

Often, these ‘new things’ we see were there all along.

Last weekend I watched an old movie with my sons — the original Total Recall. There is a short scene where Arnold’s character Douglas Quaid is on Mars and a man from the company ‘Recall’ turns up to try and convince Quaid that his escapade on the red planet is all in his head, and that he is still in fact on Earth, strapped into a machine at ‘Recall’.

The man from ‘Recall’ shows Quaid a little red pill and says, “Swallow this.”

“What is it?” asks Quaid.

“It’s a symbol… of your desire to return to reality,” the man replies.

Now I am sure all Arktos readers have seen the film Total Recall. It was filmed in 1990, nine years before The Matrix. Yet I expect most of you consider the ‘Red Pill’ idea originated in The Matrix movie.

The metaphor may well have arisen earlier, yet the point I am trying to make is that you have seen the movie Total Recall, perhaps many times, and you will have seen that scene play out. But you do not remember it. You do not associate the ‘Red Pill’ of Total Recall with the broad idea of awakening to reality. You associate it with The Matrix, for that is the popular opinion.

When you see that scene again in Total Recall, you will now experience an “Ah-ha!” moment. You’ve seen it before but now your attention has been placed upon it and thus you see it for what it is.

This example holds a deep spiritual lesson.

In meditation, we hold the attention on the sensation of the breath through our nose. We breathe in, we breathe out, we follow the breath. When the attention is held on the breath consistently, we are meditating and our brain experiences certain things all the way through to eventual ‘awakening’.

However, our attention wanders. It’s a survival mechanism. And we do not notice at first that our attention has wandered. When we do notice, this is an “Ah-ha!” moment and our teacher will suggest that we congratulate ourselves for noticing before placing the attention back upon the sensation of the breath.

Unfortunately, without consistent practice, we do not notice when our attention wanders, and so most people think that it is hard to meditate. We can sit on a funny little cushion and believe that we are meditating, but we have not noticed the reality, which is that our attention is bouncing around all over the place.

Crafting a mindset that is aware of reality was the purpose of my book, Towards Awakening: An Odinic Perspective. Opening minds to things that our folk have been repeatedly taught are wrong is not easy. Attempting to forge a Golden Age Mindset when we are still only potentially just emerging from the darkest Wolf Age is difficult.

The Yugas are very interesting; most people are still rooted in darkness, but some shine very brightly indeed. This is why, throughout history, a few beacons are apparent — those folk who seem way ahead of their time and are often persecuted for it.

Interestingly, I once read that our bright, shining Sunna vibrates at a higher frequency as the Yugic cycle changes. This vibration thus raises the vibration of humanity, and is possibly the reason our enemies wage war against the sun in various ways.

This can all get a bit surreal, so let’s go back to the simple things.

In my ‘Red Pill’ movie example above, you will have been made aware that it is not only possible, but actually very common, to see things but not notice them. From there, it follows that if that is indeed the case, logically (if we are honest) there must be many more things we see that we do not notice. We do not see many things as they really are.

Corporations understand this. Those who wish to deceive us understand this. Often we are told things but we do not properly understand what we are being told and many times we see things but we do not notice them.

Even our own ego can work against our journey towards awakening. You see, our ego desperately needs to preserve the physical body. It is how the ego survives. Without a physical body there is no ego. And so, as we try to meditate, our ego steps in to stop us.

In no way am I attempting to demonise the physical body; Odinism appreciates all aspects of life. We actually need the body in order to awaken (we use the sensation of the breath upon the flesh of our nose) and we also need to train the physical body to create beautiful aesthetics, which in turn aid our enlightenment. This is why the media is presently so against fitness and bodybuilding, for example, and also we are told all manner of lies about nutrition.

Simply put, we need to recognise the ego for what it is, acknowledge it, yet also strive towards a higher spiritual plane.

War has been waged upon us physically; however, the real war is spiritual and it is a war we must win. It starts with the individual.

Read your books, train physically and adopt a spiritual practice. Do these three things with a ‘Red Pill’ awareness and your brain, body and spirit will not only be better able to ride the tiger of the modern world, but you will act as a beacon of light to shine the way forwards into the next great age.

Awake! Awake! Awake!

P R Reddall

P R Reddall grew up in the industrial midlands, but a love of the countryside saw him move to a small village in the west of England where he presently lives with his wife, three children and dog. Always pagan in his views, he came upon the faith of Odinism in his late teens. It appealed to his sense of natural order and offered a logical folkish lineage to gods and ancestors. He leads a small Odinist hearth, enjoys hikes in the mountains, lifting weights, riding his motorcycle and playing the guitar.
